International parcel tracking helps senders understand where their packages are and what happens during transportation. When you ship a parcel from the USA to Europe, tracking updates become especially useful because shipments pass through several processing facilities and customs checkpoints. Understanding common delivery statuses helps you recognize normal progress, identify potential delays, and communicate with recipients more effectively.
What Do Common International Parcel Tracking Statuses Mean?
Tracking systems record important events throughout a parcel’s journey, although the exact terminology varies between carriers. Understanding the following statuses makes it easier to interpret shipment updates and recognize the different delivery stages:
- shipment information received — the carrier has received the parcel’s electronic details, but the package may not have been physically accepted or scanned yet;
- accepted by carrier — the shipping provider has received the parcel and registered it within its transportation network;
- in transit — the package is moving between processing locations or awaiting its next transportation stage, without necessarily receiving continuous updates;
- arrived at sorting facility — the parcel has reached a distribution center where shipments are organized according to their destinations and onward routes;
- customs clearance in progress — customs authorities are processing the shipment and may require additional documentation before releasing it;
- out for delivery — the local delivery carrier has assigned the parcel to a delivery route, usually indicating an expected delivery attempt that day.
These messages represent different checkpoints rather than continuous information about the package’s exact location. Reading them in chronological order provides a clearer picture of transportation progress and helps distinguish routine processing from situations requiring attention.
Why Do Tracking Updates Sometimes Stop for Several Days?
A temporary absence of tracking updates does not necessarily indicate that a parcel has been lost. International shipments frequently travel between countries without receiving new scans at every transportation stage.
For example, a package departing an American sorting facility may not receive another update until it reaches a European processing center. During this period, the tracking system might continue displaying “In transit” even though the parcel is moving through the transportation network.
Customs procedures can also create gaps between tracking events. Packages entering European countries may undergo documentation checks, inspections, or other import procedures. The duration varies depending on the destination, shipment contents, and customs workload.
Tracking information may also appear later when different transportation partners exchange shipment data. The original carrier and local delivery service sometimes operate separate tracking systems, which can affect how quickly new events become visible.
When a status remains unchanged, compare the latest recorded event with the estimated delivery window. If that window has passed or the carrier reports an exception, contact customer support with the tracking number to request clarification.
How Can You Use Tracking Information to Manage Delivery?
Effective parcel tracking involves more than checking the shipment’s location repeatedly. It also helps senders prepare recipients for delivery and respond promptly when additional action becomes necessary.
Share the tracking number shortly after dispatch so the recipient can monitor the package independently. Encourage them to check notifications from the local delivery provider, particularly when identification, delivery confirmation, or collection arrangements are required.
Pay special attention to messages such as “Delivery attempted,” “Available for pickup,” or “Delivery exception.” These statuses may indicate that the recipient needs to arrange another delivery attempt, collect the parcel, or provide corrected address information.
A “Delivered” notification normally confirms that the carrier has recorded the completed delivery. If the recipient cannot locate the package, they should check the designated delivery location and contact the local carrier for further details.
